This model shows the internal structure of the planet Earth. A fragment is cut out of the sphere, and through it the successive shells of the planet are visible – from the outer crust through the mantle to the core at the centre. The globe is used when studying the internal structure of the Earth, the movements of the earth’s crust, earthquakes and volcanism in geography and natural science lessons, and it suits teaching in grades 5 to 11.
The sphere has a diameter of 320 mm and stands on a stand; the cut-out segment covers a fragment of 1/8 of the surface and reveals the concentric shells in section: the earth’s crust as a thin strip, the mantle as the widest layer and the core at the centre. The surface of the sphere carries the continents, the oceans and the largest geographic features, and the model is painted in bright contrasting colours for clarity. It needs no power supply and has no moving mechanisms apart from rotation on the stand; it is installed on the demonstration desk of the classroom and its surfaces may be wiped with a dry or slightly damp cloth.
The set includes the globe model with the cut-out segment – 1 pc; a stand of black plastic – 1 pc; the axis and fastening parts depending on the version, according to the packing list; a passport with a warranty card – 1 pc; and individual transport packaging – 1 pc.
In the lesson the whole part of the sphere is turned to the class first, so that students recognise the continents, the oceans, the equator and the poles, and then the cut is turned towards the class and the shells are named in order from the surface inwards and back from the centre outwards. Carry the globe with both hands, supporting it from below rather than by the edge of the cut, rotate the sphere smoothly and point at objects with a pointer or the blunt end of a pencil. Wipe the sphere and the stand with a dry soft microfibre cloth and remove dust from the cut with a soft dry brush; solvents, alcohol, acetone, glass cleaners and abrasives are not allowed. Operating conditions are a school room with an air temperature from +5 to +40 degrees Celsius and a relative humidity from 40 to 60 percent without condensate, away from direct sunlight and sources of heat. The service life is 5 years and the warranty period is 12 months from the date of sale.
