Description
This digital laboratory for the biology classroom is a complete system for laboratory research in general secondary schools and in higher education institutions, supplied in the teacher configuration. Students use it to run experiments on the life processes of plants and animals, on biochemical reactions and on the functions of the human body, and the system serves the study of plant physiology, histology, microbiology, human physiology and other branches of biology. The platform joins hardware, multimedia content and elements of generative artificial intelligence, which makes lessons inclusive and engaging for students of different levels of preparation; work with it develops attention, logical and visual thinking, creative ability and cooperation skills, and tasks are performed individually or in groups. The recommended age of students is from 10 years, that is grade 5 and above, and the laboratory is used under the guidance of a teacher.
The laboratory takes measurements in real time from the experimental setup and shows the result at the moment it is obtained, then passes the data to the end device and to the web platform for further use and processing by students. Each sensor carries a colour LCD screen of 1.8 inches diagonal that displays the reading immediately, and each sensor works autonomously, without a datalogger or any other analogue to digital converter attached in order to send the results to a computer or a tablet. Data are transferred wirelessly over Bluetooth at a range of 10 metres and also over a wired connection, including USB, to a personal computer, a mobile device or a cloud service, with simultaneous reading from several sensors. The sampling rate is 10 to 200 measurements per second depending on the sensor type, pressure accuracy is 1 hectopascal and temperature accuracy is 0.5 degrees Celsius. The client application is supplied for Windows and macOS with a Ukrainian interface and English as an option, and it shows the data as tables and graphs and exports them to spreadsheet editors and other programs; the computer needs 2 GB of RAM and 500 MB of free disk space. The sensors are powered by built in rechargeable batteries with no replaceable cells and are recharged once a quarter, and the system is modular, so its functionality is extended by adding new sensors without replacing the main equipment. Operating conditions are the premises of an education institution at air temperature from +5 to +40 degrees Celsius and relative humidity from 40 to 60 % without condensate; the service life is 5 years, the warranty period is 12 months and technical support of the software runs 12 months. Marking and operating documentation are in Ukrainian.
The base set holds 12 kinds of sensor in 13 units, two of them heart rate sensors. It includes a wireless carbon dioxide sensor with a resolution of 1 ppm over 0 to 50 000 ppm; a wireless oxygen sensor, 0.1 % over 0 to 100 %; a wireless dissolved oxygen sensor, 0.1 mg/l over 0 to 20 mg/l; a wireless colorimeter sensor, 0.01 % over 0 to 100 %; a wireless temperature sensor, 0.01 degrees Celsius from -50 to +200 degrees Celsius; a wireless surface temperature sensor, 0.1 degrees Celsius from -25 to +125 degrees Celsius; a wireless gas pressure sensor, 0.1 kPa over 0 to 700 kPa; a wireless sound sensor, 0.1 dB over 20 Hz to 20 000 Hz and 20 dB to 120 dB; a wireless ultraviolet sensor measuring an intensity of 0 to 11 UV index in steps of 1 UV index at a detection wavelength of 200 to 370 nm; wireless heart rate sensors – 2 pcs, 30 to 200 beats per minute in steps of 1 beat per minute; a wireless respiration sensor, 0.01 l/s from -10 to +10 l/s; and a wireless ECG sensor, 0.1 mV over 0 to 5 V at a sampling rate of 50 to 200 Hz. The delivery also carries a box with shaped insert trays for the sensors, a USB cable for connection to a computer, software on an optical disc or with a download link, 3 single use ECG electrodes, the passport with the warranty card, individual transport packaging, a methodological guide for the teacher and for the student describing 14 laboratory and project works, and the access right to the online course with the assistant built on a language model.
The product carries the right of access to an online teaching support course hosted in a learning management system and designed for 70 academic hours of lessons, compiled for the current programmes of general secondary education institutions of Ukraine. The material is grouped into research modules in the subjects physics, biology, chemistry and STEM, and every topic holds a lesson plan, a list of the equipment required, a scenario for conducting the experiment, a step by step instruction for the laboratory work with an explanation of the expected result, a video demonstration of the working techniques, and interactive exercises and tasks for independent study and for project activity, suitable for individual and for group work. All modules were compiled for this same equipment and verified on it, so the course runs along a direct chain from the unit of equipment to the method of its use to the expected learning results. The sensors send the measurement results to the electronic platform automatically, so a student does not copy readings from a screen or enter numbers by hand, and the built in artificial intelligence agent works with that data directly: it builds graphs and tables, processes the results, shows the regularities that appeared during the experiment, compares the measurements with the reference values set for the work and leads the student to formulate a hypothesis, a conclusion and an interpretation within a defined corridor of knowledge, narrowing the search to the right direction instead of giving a ready answer. Full scale digital research therefore runs without manual data entry.
The kit includes an AI assistant built into the learning management system on retrieval-augmented generation. It selects research tasks and experiments matching the topic of the lesson, describes the procedure of the experiment step by step, identifies typical student errors and gives personalised recommendations for correcting them, adapts task difficulty to different levels of student preparation, supports students in compiling reports on research results and in structuring the conclusions drawn from experiments, and works on a localised knowledge base aligned with the national curriculum of Ukraine. The licence for the course and the software is valid for 12 months; content, interface and learning materials are in Ukrainian. The interface of the learning platform is multilingual, with Ukrainian localisation enabled by default and an English interface available as an option, and the licence term is counted from the date the access is handed over.
The heart rate, respiration and ECG sensors are not medical devices and serve only educational demonstrations and research; measurements with them are taken with the voluntary consent of the student and in the presence of the teacher, and the single use ECG electrodes are disposed of after the lesson and are not applied again to another student. Charge the built in batteries of every sensor fully from the supplied USB cable before the first use, install the software, switch the sensors on one by one and check that they appear in the list of active devices, then add the sensors needed to the experiment scenario, set the recording parameters, watch the graphs in real time and save the data in CSV or XLS format for further processing. Calibration and preparation of the sensors are carried out by the teacher and students work under supervision. Keep liquids away from the electronic parts of the sensors, follow the rules of humane treatment when working with living organisms, use protective gloves and goggles with chemical solutions, and do not immerse the oxygen sensor in concentrated acids or alkalis. Wipe the sensor bodies with a soft slightly damp cloth after each experiment without abrasives, solvents or alcohol, check the sensors and the charge level once a month, and store the system in a dry closed room at temperature from +5 to +40 degrees Celsius and relative humidity to 80 % without condensation, protected from direct sunlight, and transport it in rigid packaging with the sensors fixed in place.
