Digital Chemistry Laboratory for Teachers

A wireless digital sensor laboratory for the teacher’s chemistry classroom, supplied with software, a 70-hour digital course and an AI assistant on the learning platform.

Description

The LABOTRIX SENSE CHEM L3 is a digital laboratory for the chemistry classroom, a system for running chemistry experiments in educational institutions that comprises a set of digital sensors, software and supporting materials. It makes it possible to study the thermodynamics of chemical reactions, electrochemistry, kinetics, concentration analysis and other branches of chemistry experimentally in the basic and specialised courses, and is designed for classroom work under the guidance of a teacher and for use in teaching laboratories. Each sensor is fitted with a colour LCD screen of 1.8 inch diagonal that shows the measurement result at the moment it is taken, in a form usable during the experiment, and each sensor works fully autonomously, without a data logger or any other additional analogue-to-digital converter that would have to be attached in order to pass results to a computer or a tablet.

The base set holds 10 sensor types, 11 instruments in total, since only the gas pressure sensor is doubled. The temperature sensor measures from −50 to +200 °C with 0.01 °C resolution and a rated accuracy of ±0.5 °C; the surface temperature sensor covers −25 to +125 °C with 0.1 °C resolution; the carbon dioxide sensor covers 0 to 50 000 ppm with 1 ppm resolution; the oxygen sensor covers 0 to 100 % with 0.1 % resolution; the dissolved oxygen sensor covers 0 to 20 mg/l with 0.1 mg/l resolution; the drop counter sensor covers 0 to 240 drops per minute with a resolution of 1 drop per minute; the pH sensor covers 0 to 14 pH with 0.01 resolution; the conductivity sensor covers 0 to 20 000 µS/cm with 1 µS/cm resolution; the two gas pressure sensors cover 0 to 700 kPa with 0.1 kPa resolution; and the colorimeter with three light filters covers 0 to 100 % with 0.01 % resolution.

Connection is wireless over Bluetooth, and wired connection including USB, transfer to a personal computer, a mobile device or a cloud service, and simultaneous reading of data from several sensors are supported. The sensors run on a built-in rechargeable battery and are charged from the supplied charger, which charges 4 sensors at the same time. The software displays the measured data as tables and graphs and exports it to spreadsheet editors and other programs; it runs on Windows 7/10, Mac OS and Linux with a Ukrainian interface and English as an option, and the computer needs a USB port and 2 GB of RAM. The set includes a wireless temperature sensor, a wireless surface temperature sensor, a wireless carbon dioxide sensor, a wireless oxygen sensor, a wireless dissolved oxygen sensor, a wireless drop counter sensor, a wireless pH sensor, a wireless conductivity sensor, wireless gas pressure sensors — 2 pcs, a wireless colorimeter with red, green and blue filters, a box with lodgement inserts for the sensors, a methodological guide for the teacher and the student together with the operating manual, a licence granting access to the online course with the language-model assistant, plastic cuvettes for the colorimeter — 10 pcs, buffer solutions for calibrating the pH sensor at pH 4, 7 and 10, a charger that serves 4 sensors at once, a USB cable for connection to a computer, the software on CD or for download, a passport with a warranty card, and individual transport packaging; twelve ready experiment protocols come with the software. Reagents and materials for the individual experiments, apart from the calibration buffers, are provided by the educational institution.

The sensors pass measurement results to the electronic platform automatically, so a student neither copies readings off the screen nor types numbers in by hand, and full-scale digital research runs without manual data entry. The built-in artificial intelligence agent then works with that body of data: it builds graphs and tables from it, processes the results obtained, shows the patterns that appeared during the experiment, compares the measurements against the reference values for that piece of work, and leads the student towards formulating a hypothesis, a conclusion and an interpretation independently, holding them within the defined corridor of knowledge, narrowing the search to the right direction instead of handing over a ready answer. Access to a digital teaching support course hosted in a learning management system is transferred with the product, with 70 academic hours of material written to the current curricula of general secondary education in Ukraine, grouped into research modules in the subjects of physics, biology, chemistry and STEM, where every topic carries a lesson plan, a list of the equipment required, a scenario for running the experiment, a step-by-step laboratory instruction explaining the expected result, a video demonstration of working techniques, and interactive exercises and assignments for independent study and for project activity. All modules were compiled for this same equipment and verified on it, so the course runs along a direct chain from the equipment to the method to the learning outcomes.

The kit includes an AI assistant built into the learning management system on retrieval-augmented generation. It selects research tasks and experiments matching the topic of the lesson, describes the procedure of the experiment step by step, identifies typical student errors and gives personalised recommendations for correcting them, adapts task difficulty to different levels of student preparation, supports students in compiling reports on research results and in structuring the conclusions drawn from experiments, and works on a localised knowledge base aligned with the national curriculum of Ukraine. The licence for the course and the software is valid for 12 months; content, interface and learning materials are in Ukrainian. For this product the course content and the assistant’s answers are delivered in Ukrainian, while the interface of the learning platform is multilingual: Ukrainian localisation is enabled by default and an English interface is available as an option.

The system is operated by a teacher or a trained laboratory assistant familiar with the safety rules for work with chemical reagents and laboratory equipment, and students work with it only under the supervision of a teacher. All participants wear safety goggles and clothing that covers the skin, sensors are never immersed in water while charging, and washing the sensors in a dishwasher or under a strong jet of water, immersing them in organic solvents, concentrated acids or alkalis without appropriate protection, and disassembling them are prohibited. After each experiment the sensors are rinsed with distilled water and wiped with a soft lint-free cloth, the colorimeter lens is cleaned only with optical wipes, the pH sensor is calibrated with the pH 4, 7 and 10 buffer solutions once a week, and the temperature sensor is checked monthly against a reference thermometer in ice water and in boiling water. The laboratory stands on a bench in the chemistry classroom and needs no additional mounting, is used at an air temperature from +5 to +40 °C and relative humidity from 40 to 60 % without condensate, and is stored in a dry closed room at a temperature from +5 to +40 °C and relative humidity of 80 % without condensation. The service life is 5 years and the warranty period is 12 months.
