Model globe “Structure of the Sun”

A 320 mm globe model of the Sun with a removable surface segment that opens the section through the core, the radiative and convective zones, the photosphere, the chromosphere and the corona for physics and astronomy lessons.

Description

This model demonstrates the appearance of the solar disc and the internal structure of the Sun in section. It shows the concentric layers from the core through the zones of energy transfer to the visible surface and the outer layers of the atmosphere. The globe suits physics and astronomy classrooms and is used when studying the structure of the Sun, the solar system and the phenomena of solar activity.

The model has the form of a sphere with a diameter of 320 mm and stands on a holder. One segment of the surface is removable: taking it off opens the section, where the internal shells are marked in colour – the core, the radiative transfer zone, the convective zone, the photosphere, the chromosphere and the corona. The surface reproduces the appearance of the photosphere with the manifestations of activity – sunspots, faculae, prominences and flares. The applied marking of the layers and of the manifestations of activity does not wear off during ordinary wiping. The model has no mechanisms and needs no power supply; it is placed on a flat surface of the demonstration desk, requires no mounting and serves both frontal demonstration and work in groups.

The set includes the globe model with the section – 1 pc; a stand, that is a holder for the sphere – 1 pc; fastening parts depending on the version, according to the packing list; a passport with a warranty card – 1 pc; and individual transport packaging – 1 pc. If the set contains no legend of the layers, the table of layers given in the passport is used.

In the lesson the whole surface is turned to the class first and the manifestations of activity are named, then the segment is removed and the layers are traced with a pointer from the photosphere inwards to the core and back, following the path of energy from the centre outwards; after the demonstration the segment is returned to its place. Observing the real Sun with the naked eye or through a telescope, binoculars, a magnifier or any other optics is categorically forbidden, because a direct look causes an irreversible burn of the retina; the permitted ways to show the Sun are projection of its image through a telescope onto a white screen, certified factory-made eclipse glasses or filters, and photographs and videos from scientific sources. Carry the model with both hands by the sphere from below, not by the removable segment, and wipe the sphere and the stand with a soft dry cloth, cleaning the recesses of the section with a soft dry brush; solvents, alcohol, acetone, chlorine agents and abrasives are not allowed. Operating conditions are a school room with an air temperature from +5 to +40 degrees Celsius and a relative humidity from 40 to 60 percent without condensate, away from direct sunlight and heating appliances. The service life is 5 years and the warranty period is 12 months from the date of sale.
